1. Snort some coke
2. Ask if you still want people to talk you out of it. If Yes, repeat step 1.

I’ve seen better 928 deals. I’d pass on it if I were you. And this is coming from someone who would be buying a Jaguar XJS right now if he had the money, so it’s not the potential for problems that bothers me. I like 928s, but this 928 isn’t talking to me.

I’m super curious to take a look at it in person. He’s selling in a pretty tiny market, so that price might be negotiable, especially with a Montana winter imminent.

I don't know, that licence plate bothers me. Is it a reference to some war?

True. But as I keep trying to remind myself when looking at Jaguars, I don’t necessarily want the cheapest one. This one has bad paint, the interior plastic seems pretty faded, the tail lights are delaminating, and it’s not one of the better years for the 928. None of those are particularly easy or cheap to fix (maybe the tail lights are... I don’t know, but anyway). I’d rather go for a later version in better condition, even if it cost me another $1-2k.

buy it, bring (road trip) it to Chicago, sell for profit.

It’s a fair deal for a 928. It seems like there are not many manual 928s out there, and it sounds like this owner has been giving it some attention. The original paint on those cars is rarely very good so the fading and peeling is to be expected.
I don’t know if you live in northern Montana, but I can’t imagine there’s a wild Porsche market there. If it’s something you truly want, go check it out at least.

How many of those better deals were ~30 miles south of the Canadian border in Montana? I think it's worth checking out if it's close to this person and it's a car they actually want.

It might not be a crack pipe but it’s not a nice price either. “Original paint” is an unusual way to say “needs a paint job"

I mean, sure, I don’t live there so I have no clue. He can check it out if he wants, but when buying an old supercar (which they pretty much were in their time), I’d go to much greater lengths to find a good one than I would if I were just looking for a secondhand Camry. Flying out to California and driving a good one back is preferable to buying a piece of junk that’s close to me. Not saying this is definitely junk, and the fact that this person has owned it since 1980 is probably a good sign, but like I said, it just isn’t talking to me. I’d pass.
He did ask to be talked out of it, lol. He doesn’t need encouragement; he’ll probably check it out either way if he’s interested.

This is solid advice. I can’t get a handle on the paint from the photos, it looks like it’s still wet from the car wash. I’m not wild about the color anyway, I always liked my 928s in brown...

You’re right that it may be a car worth traveling for but that adds pretty significant cost and that superish-car purchasing should be done with some care.
The paint tends to bother me less because it seems like all of these cars that have miles and are affordable have faded paint if it’s original and if a car is going to have a respray, then I’d rather be the one to choose the color and the shop who is doing it. Also, poor paint doesn’t prevent driving it, which since he’s looking at a 140,000 car, I’m guessing it’s to drive it.
You never know if you show up to look at a car, how the sellers going to sound about selling it(firm or negotiable) what records of maintenance they have.

Exactly. NinetyQ has some great input but I always think you get a better sense of a car(and the seller) in person. Like I said, if you actually want this car, then it’s worth checking out. If it’s just a “damn this is a cooler car then I’m used to seeing on Craigslist” thing, then I'd throw a search in the Denver, Seattle, and Boise CL to get a sense of the market.

Right, but again, he said to talk him out of it. If nothing else, I figured he would want some things to consider. I didn’t tell him to pass on it entirely if that’s what he wants; I gave my opinion and some things to consider. If he buys it despite that and ends up loving it, then awesome, I was wrong. But if he passes due to my advice and finds something better, then he’s even better off.

I’ll concede this though: it seems to be better priced than I thought. Prices seem to have risen a bit since the last time I paid attention, because I can’t find any semi-reasonable examples on craigslist in the several places I just looked for this price.

That looks like a pretty good deal, actually. I wonder how torn up the seats are under those covers, but honestly, where the hell else are you going to find a clean 928 in northern Montana??

I have friends who live in the SLO, but that’s a looooong trailer for me back to Montana. And, too much automatic.
You also have weirdly specific trade options, but I guess that’s a luxury when you live in a giant used car market.

HA HA, well just things I want lol. It’s a third car and second project that I have just decided that isn’t worth my time. You’re right about the auto thing, way not worth it, but you did say try to talk you out of it...

This car has been sitting on the side of the highway for almost a year. It looks pretty ragged. I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole.
